This 2020 Ford Fusion came into our Kearny Mesa shop with damage down the left side, mostly on the rear door and quarter panel. Here's what we did.
The repair
- Replaced the left rear door shell. We put on a new door shell and refinished it in the factory color.
- Repaired the dents and scratches on the left quarter panel. We worked out the damage and refinished the panel.
- Blended the left front door. Blending fades the new color into the panel next to the repair so you can't see where the new paint stops.
- Repaired and refurbished the right rear wheel.
- Blended the right roof rail.
Candy apple red: a three-stage refinish
Most cars get a two-stage finish: a color coat, then clear. This candy apple red is a three-stage color. First a solid base goes down, then a tinted, see-through mid-coat, then clear on top. The final color depends on how many coats of that mid-coat go on and how heavy each one is. One coat too many or too few and the panel comes out darker or lighter than the rest of the car. That's why three-stage reds are some of the hardest colors to match, and why we blended the panels next to the repair.
